The purpose of this study was to found out how politeness strategies are used by the characters and how variables of power and distance influence the choice of politeness levels in Pinter's well-known play, "The Birthday Party". The findings of this study that the assertion of power is a complicated process which can not only be explained by the high frequency of the use of certain strategies and interlecutor's power, but for many factors like the role of the interlocutor and his/her status in the particular interaction, and in relation to the addressee. Design of this study was a type of a content analysis research which was conducted to apply Brown and Levinson's politeness model on "The Birthday Party" drama. Data analysis of this study use mix methods because this study use qualitative methods of analysis as the major way of evaluation and also use quantitative approach for calculating and compared for all participants in the play. The conclusion of this study was the use of politeness strategies must congruent with the role of the interlocutor and his/her status in the particular interaction, and more importantly in relation to the addressee.
